What is UCU?

UCU, the University and College Union, is the largest trade union and professional association for academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers and academic-related staff working in further and higher education throughout the UK.

UCU has almost 110,000 members so is the largest post-school education union in the world; it campaigns on a range of issues including job security, academic freedom and workload.

Who are ICUCU?

The Imperial College UCU branch is made up of staff from all departments and disciplines. The Branch Committee currently has 12 active members and a part-time Membership Secretary and Administrator.

What do we do?

The Branch committee meets once a month to run the local affairs of the union. We negotiate with College management on Imperial College’s terms and conditions of service including pay. We represent staff on Health & Safety Committees and our trained caseworkers advise and represent individual

members on matters relating to their employment.

Why should you join UCU?

You will spend the majority of your life at work so it really does pay to be in a union that ensures your pay and conditions are protected and improved, and that you are treated with respect in the workplace.

Members also have access to:

  • Support throughout your career from free CPD courses to confidential advice if you have a problem at work;
  • Help from trained local reps, backed by full-time UCU officials, to resolve employment issues;
  • An excellent legal scheme (after an initial qualifying membership period) provided by specialist employment lawyers, giving members access to professional legal advice, covering employment rights, personal injury and police enquiries.

Recent Bullying & Harassment survey

In the spring of 2015 a survey of UCU members revealed that 71% of respondents reported they had experienced bullying or harassment in the previous 12 months while 53% had witnessed other staff suffering such a fate. Over half experienced: loss of confidence; anxiety; loss of sleep. A quarter suffered from depression, irritability and feared going to work.

64% felt there was a bullying culture at Imperial College and 71% believed that the organisation’s policy on Bullying and Harassment was ineffective. Many affected members sought support from UCU.
